TEKANÓNHKWA
RESTORATION AND LAND-BASED LEARNING
To restore honour and dignity to Mother Earth by revitalizing land and community through collective, collaborative action. We are committed to uplifting Indigenous culture and connection through land-based learning, stewardship, and shared responsibility.
ABOUT
The name Tekanónhkwa “Two Medicines,” rooted in Kanien’kéha (Mohawk), reflects a teaching of reciprocity, a balanced, two-way relationship where people care for the land and the land in turn, sustains the people.
This concept guides our approach to the stewardship of the air, land, and water, emphasizing mutual respect, responsibility, and connection. Tekanónhkwa Restoration and Land-based Learning represents an evolution of the former Wiijindamaan Project, carrying forward its foundations while entering a new chapter. Under its previous name, our initiative brought together community partners and hosted workshops, cultural gatherings, and engaged in Indigenous youth-led research and land-based education programs.
It also developed food gardens, a food forest, and habitat restoration efforts, earning recognition in 2024 with an award for urban agriculture from the Province of Ontario.
Tekanónhkwa is not just about ecological restoration, it also centers Indigenous youth engagement, cultural revitalization, and allyship.
We continue to build on past relationships and knowledge to support both the land and the communities connected to it.
